Item CEO psychological biases, firm performance and alternative mechanisms in transition economies: evidence from Malaysia(Cogent OA, 2024) Rehman, Saif Ur; Alami, Rachid; Abidi, NaseemThis study examines the impact of CEO psychological biases (narcissistic and hubristic) in CEOs on a firm’s performance measured by long-term investor value appropriation (LIVA) in Malaysia. Based on a sample of 560 Malaysian firms for 2007–2022, we find the negative effect of CEO narcissism and hubris on firm performance. In comparative terms, the impact of CEO narcissism is more pronounced. Furthermore, we tested the moderating role of CEO attributes. CEO-duality and ownership moderate the CEO-narcissism/hubris LIVA negative relationships, whereas CEO tenure curtails the relationship. Furthermore, we also tested the role of governance in curtailing the effect of CEO narcissism/hubris on LIVA. The findings show that gender critical mass, foreign ownership, and group affiliation substitute the negative impact of CEO narcissism/hubris on LIVA. However, board independence and strategic alliance only weaken the negative effect of the psychological biases (narcissistic and hubristic) on LIVA. In additional analyses, gender critical mass is a substitution mechanism for the direct impact of foreign ownership and group affiliation on LIVA. This study enhances the existing knowledge on CEO narcissism and hubris by illustrating that CEO personality qualities impact the firm performance in the emerging context of Malaysia. © 2024 The Author(s). Design/methodology/approach: A total of 95 five-star hotels were contacted, with data collected from only 30 of them. The study used only 433 questionnaires for the final analysis with SPSS 25.0 and SmartPLS 3.2.8. Findings: The results revealed that HEMI is positively associated with sustainable hotel performance and with EEB. EEB is positively associated with sustainable hotel performance. ES significantly influence EEB, and significantly strengthen the relationship between HMEI and EEB. EEB significantly mediates the relationship between HEMI and sustainable hotel performance. Practical implications: The current research highlights a significant issue: how the management of the hotel industry uses HEMI, ES and EEB to improve sustainable performance. The study fills the gap in the literature and enables hotel management to concentrate on studying exogenous variables to increase sustainable performance. Originality/value: The current research contributes to the body of knowledge by concentrating on factors that influence sustainable hotel performance. It examines HEMI influence on sustainable performance with moderating (ES) and mediating (EEB) effects, from the leans of natural resource-based view (RBV) theory. © 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.Item Reducing cognitive dissonance in health care: Design of a new Positive psychology intervention tool to regulate professional stress among nurses(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2022) Alami, Rachid; Elrehail, Hamzah; Alzghoul, AmroItem Typology of Corporate Social Responsibility: The Applicability of CSR within SMES Companies in Developing Countries – The Case of Morocco(The International Society for Technology Education and Science, 2023) Alami, Rachid; Contu, Davide; Stachowicz-Stanusch, AgataThis research aims to analyze and evaluate the constraints and factors that prevent the implementation of CSR principles within SMEs in developing countries, specifically in Morocco. Morocco has adopted a national sustainable development strategy in line with its 2011 constitution and international commitments. The National Strategy for Sustainable Development sets objectives for 2017-2030 and identifies operational measures. It is considered a continuous process that requires various actors, including SMEs, to modify their behavior by integrating socio-environmental components more significantly into their strategic roadmaps. However, recent diagnostics have revealed that while the elements of sustainability are present in the majority of policies, their implementation remains insufficient. This study focuses on both internal variables (employee commitment, strategic decisions, internal organization, and the posture of the entrepreneur-owner) and external variables (competition, business opportunities, and government incentives) that can influence the application and implementation of CSR in Moroccan SMEs. The results highlight significant gaps in terms of employee awareness, company strategy, organizational structure and processes, as well as owner awareness regarding CSR. The findings also suggest that company size, sector, and age are associated with distinct outcomes. © 2023 Published by the ISTES Organization
